Traditional children’s characters such as Anne of Green Gables are being forgotten as classic books are shunned by the latest generation, according to a university study.

Fra den engelske avisen Guardian:  Why it’s OK that some children think Aslan is a giraffe.  A new survey from the University of Worcester, conducted online on 500 children between the ages of seven and 14, has found that «classic children’s literary heroes are dying out». Only 45% of the children questioned had heard of Alice in Wonderland and 8% of Mary Lennox. Nearly a fifth of the kids thought CS Lewis’s wardrobe led to The Secret Garden

Only half of all youngsters have heard of Harry Potter despite the boy wizard being the star of eight hit movies and the best-selling book series in history, according to a new poll.  Other literary heroes have suffered an even worse fate in their memories as novels drift out of the national consciousness in what researchers say is due to the rise of TV and video game entertainment?

Pippi Longstocking books charged with racism. Pippi is not the first classic children’s character to be hit with similar accusations. Earlier this year, a French academic said the Smurfs were antisemitic, racist and communist. Antoine Buéno, a lecturer at Sciences Po university in Paris, pointed out that the little blue creatures live in a world where private initiative is rarely rewarded, where meals are eaten communally and where there is one leader. «Does that not remind you of anything? A political dictatorship, for example?» he asked.
